Series review: "Las chicas del cable"

It’s time for the first review of the series. Moreover, it is one of my favourite series in general.

“Las chicas del cable” (eng. “Cable Girls”) “is a Spanish period drama web television series that ran from April 2017 and concluded in July 2020 produced by Netflix” (first Spanish original produced by Netflix). Set in the late 1920s, more specifically, in 1928, the series is filmed in Madrid, the capital of Spain, in various locations.

You can tell a lot about this series. There is not only a captivating storyline, but also an interesting presentation of history, especially a little section of the fight for women’s rights in Spain. There is also no shortage of a beautiful love story, dynamic action and friendship that can survive anything.

The series tells about the lives of four young women who work in a modern telecommunications company as title cable girls. This job provides them a little bit of independence and decent pay. The series shows what problems and obstacles women had to deal with in 1920s Spain, in a society dominated by men and in general unfavourable for women. Actresses Blanca Suárez, Ana Fernández, Nadia de Santiago and Maggie Civantos wonderfully create their characters, giving them individual features and making you love them all. However, the brilliant leading male roles should also be mentioned: Yon González, Martiño Rivas and Nico Romero also build this series. In fact, so do many wonderful supporting actors.

Each woman has a different story and different reasons to work there. The main character, Alba, impersonates Lidia Aguilar to conceal her identity (and appears under this name until the end of the series) gets this job to complete a mission. But she doesn’t expect to meet in the company someone very important for her from the past...

Already the first season of “Cable Girls” is absorbing, let alone the next few, where the action develops, often in an unexpected way. Personally, I have the greatest sentiment for the first season naturally, and I see a small decline in form in season three which starts to be a little overwhelming. But, in spite of everything, I have to admit that I love this series entirely, til the end.

Speaking of which, the end of this series left me speechless and with my eyes full of tears for the long time. I didn’t expect this coming, and I didn’t expect to be so broken afterall. But I confess that finally I found beauty and a strong, important sound in this ending. Undoubtedly, this series carries a huge emotional charge.

The visual side of the series is extremely aesthetic: colours, clothes, places, every smallest detail pleases the eye of the viewer. I recommend this series not only to people who know the Spanish language and culture of this country. Every lover of engaging plot, interesting characters and emotions will find something for himself.

After all, I feel as if I have said nothing about this series: it is so full of emotions, things worthy of attention, important messages and emotions. Well, you have to see for yourself why.

My evaluation: 8/10
